Today is my last day of my internship as 5 months have just flew by at the blink of an eye! This is the last post where I will share my experiences in the farm!

When I was informed by my lecturer that I’m assigned to Jurong Frog Farm, I was confused! “Does Singapore even has a farm??” My friends were equally surprised when I told them where I would be having my internship. Some of my friends even laughed and joked that I could eat frogs every day. I was stunned at that point of time where it got me thinking what would I learn by being a farmer.

However, a week into my internship at Jurong Frog Farm changed my preconceived impression of how a farm work. I thought that being a farmer was to just take care of the frogs, grow them and sell them that’s all. But I was wrong, by being a farmer is definitely not as easy as I thought as we not only have to make sure that all frogs are in good condition and have no sickness. There are also many areas of work like hosting of educational tours, office work and also updating of social media which can keep a new age urban farmer busy 24/7!

I have learnt to create invoices for purchases & tour bookings made by customers. It was a challenge replying to emails back then as I am not trained to replying emails in a formal manner. With the guidance of my intern supervisor Jackson, I have improved on my email writing. I was tasked with another huge challenge as I have to come up with a promotion and also to promote it through social media and to design a poster to be placed in the retail shop to advertise.

I remember the first day when I was being attached to the farm and one of my tasks was to catch a frog. It is like Fear Factor to me as I was very scared. Somehow, I managed to muster my courage and carry one although I was still afraid of it. When the frog moved, I dropped it and this was still an incident I felt bad for. Frogs were yucky and slimy creatures to me back then. Now that I have gotten used to them, they are actually cute and friendly.

I can also still recall the jitters when Jackson told me to get ready to conduct my first tour. Although I was given many dry runs and practices, I was not comfortable and confident being in the centre of attention. To make things worse, that particular tour group required a mandarin speaking tour guide. My mind was a total blank and I almost threw in the towel. Jackson helped with the first segment which was the presentation part and that was the hardest to me because all the slides have to be interpreted from English to Chinese.

After the first segment was done, it was my turn to do the hands-on-frog segment. I was very stiff as I was too nervous. Fortunately everything went well. Although I was a greenhorn in this field, I was fortunate to have Jackson as my supervisor as he is a very patient person and gave me time to learn.

Throughout the internship, I felt that I have learnt many life skills and also through the on the job training, built up my confidence which I didn’t have back then. I am now able to host tours more coherently and confidently now. I am also able to reply emails more professionally. Marketing a product is much easier for me now as back then I thought that I would never be able to sell anything! 

 

I would like to thank Jackson again, for being so patient and guiding me slowly although I have screwed up most of the times as I can be sometimes very forgetful and miss deadlines!

 

Jurong frog farm has taught me so much and also given me an amazing and unique experience! I was also advised that these skills that I have learnt can be applied in my future working life. I wouldn’t mind to keep working at Jurong Frog Farm as I find farming is a very interesting job despite the challenges.

Oh, and lastly , I would like to thank Jackson for organising a farewell BBQ for me. It was an enjoyable get together with all the past and present JFF crew.

Protecting our Frogs and Ecosystem

Hi all Frog lovers! Frog boy is here!

Recently as I was at a reservoir taking a stroll, I saw a family releasing 2 American Bullfrogs into the reservoir. Well, I understand some release animals to the reservoir due to their beliefs of good will. But definitely not for american bull frogs as they are known as one of the most invasive species and it is a crime to release it to the reservoir.

Some people may ask ”why is it such a big deal?” It is because they are not native to our environment  and would cause damage to our ecosystem. American Bullfrogs preys and eats anything as long as it is able to fit into their big mouth. As compared to our frogs in Singapore, American Bull frogs are much larger and stronger which they will prey on our local frog and cause them to be at risk of extinction. This would affect the environment as our food chain would be broken where some animals are not able to find their food as there are no prey for them anymore. American Bullfrogs also reproduce rapidly which will cause other animals to lose their territory.

So peeps, please please please think again before releasing them into the wild or reservoir although it is of good will, but it causes great damage to the environment. If you would like to give away those American Bullfrogs/Tadpoles you are able to return them back to us or hand over to some people who will be responsible and aware of not setting it free to the wilds.

Lets all do our part to save our local frogs in Singapore!=)

Hashima with American Ginseng / Red Dates and Lotus Seeds

Hey everyone!

Frog boy is gonna share with you frog lovers some desserts where you are able to make it at home and give a treat to yourselves and family. =) This two desserts are called the “Hashima with American Ginseng” and “Hashima with Red Dates and Lotus Seeds”.

Hashima is known to help with moisturizing lungs and also to help curb coughing. And not only that, it help with skin complexion too! By enhancing the flavor of the dessert, you are able to as in a peel of orange where it will taste much better. It is a very delicious and nutritious dessert that can be made DIY. =)

1. Hashima with American Ginseng

Ingredients
Dried hashima, soaked until soft and gelatinous.
5 pieces of American ginseng
2 red dates, pitted
150 – 200 ml water
Cane rock sugar, accordingly to individual preference for sweetness
1 small piece of fresh orange peel

 

Method
1.  Place American ginseng, fresh orange peel, red dates and rock sugar into a small porcelain container with a fitting lid.
2.  Pour in 150ml to 200ml water.
3.  Double boil or steam for 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
4.  Serve warm.

 

2. Hashima with Red Dates and Lotus Seeds

Ingredients:
30g Hashima
150g Lotus Seeds
12nos Red Dates
15-18 nos Dried Longan Fruits
1 bundle Pandan Leave
Some Shredded Ginger
Rock Sugar to taste
Method:
1. Soak Hashima with ginger and water over night. It will expand and turn white, drain and discard ginger, remove the dross. Set aside.
2. Fill the pot with 2.5L water, add lotus seed and pandan leave. Bring to boil and simmer till the lotus seeds is cooked.
3. Add in red dates and dried longan fruit, continue to boil till the longan fruit expanded.
4. Add in hashima and cooked for about 5 mins.
5. Lastly add rock sugar to taste.
6. Serve warm or chill.

FRACTS #12

Hi everyone Frog boy here!

As we all know that frogs are friendly and kind creatures especially in our farm. =) But there’s a new species of frog found at the Peruvian Cloud Forest! It is said to have spines on its head and it is poisonous which would cause extreme pain!

The poison is more deadly than the secretions of a pit viper, and one of the discoverers, Carlos Jared of the Instituto Butantan in Sao Paulo found out the hard way. While collecting C. greeningi he got a spine in his hand: intense, radiating pain followed for the next five hours. It is one of the most venomous frogs!

-10 pairs frog legs (prevents dengue, prevent risk of asthma)

-3 cloves of garlic that provides nutrients like :

  • Manganese: 23% of the RDA.
  • Vitamin B6: 17% of the RDA.
  • Vitamin C: 15% of the RDA.
  • Selenium: 6% of the RDA.

(helps combat sickness, reduce blood pressure and event helps detoxification)

-6 springs of parsley leaf(a herb thats rich in antioxidant, vitamins, minerals and dietary fibre! Good news for all females, it also give protection for free radicals which would slow down oxidation process in our body.) =)

-1 tbsp butter

-1/4 cup of flour

-salt n pepper

Ingredients:

-300g Crocodile meat (high in protein and and improves heart, lungs and blood circulation which also cures asthma)

-5-6 shitake mushrooms (Japanese medicinal remedy that is used for upper respiratory tract infections, poor circulation, liver pathologies, exhaustion, premature aging)

-sliced ginger (High nutrition and helps digestive issue, nausea etc.)

-cutted spring onion (aids respiratory function, protect against infection and reduce cancer risk)

-2 cloves of garlic that provides nutrients like:

  • Manganese: 23% of the RDA.
  • Vitamin B6: 17% of the RDA.
  • Vitamin C: 15% of the RDA.
  • Selenium: 6% of the RDA.

Marinating:

-1/2 teaspoon baking soda

-1/2 teaspoon salt

-1 teaspoon sugar

-3 tbsp water

Seasoning:

-1 tbsp oyster sauce

-1 tbsp sugar

-2 tbsp hua diao wine

A new Frog Boy has arrived!!

Hi Everyone!!!  I’m Frog Boy which has just joined the frog club!

Why am i Frog boy? well… it is because I’m a boy and with the frogs. sounds reasonable right? =)

So i will be joining the JFF family for the next 5 months of internship which i feel that its gonna be exciting! At first i was afraid of touching frogs which i felt that others out there has the same fear as me too. But after overcoming my fear, they are actually cute and friendly creatures which i believe you would feel the same way as me after experiencing it at JFF (an achievement for those who never touched one before)!

As my attachment goes on, there was not much we could do outdoors for now due to the haze as it was at a unhealthy range and rainy days. But instead, I was being guided around the farm to understand different stations and their purpose. Tour dry run has been done too as i messed it up on my first 2 days due. But hey, practice makes perfect right! I was surprised that Singapore would have farms too which i found that I’m not the only one that is surprised as my friends and some others out there does not know about any farms in Singapore too. I would highly recommend everyone to come and take a visit to the farm as it is very interesting.

There are some challenges that i have faced like for example when i was holding 2 frog with both of my hand and i accidentally released and dropped(oops!) a frog which causes it to be hurt. So lesson learnt is to never release a frog even though it is struggling and this lesson is for everyone too, If a frog struggles, do not let it fall on the ground but to firm your grip or pass the frog back to any tour guide that is in-charge of it to prevent harm to the frogs.

I hope that in time i would be able to get used to grabbing on to those frogs nicely and also to be able to guide tours confidently and smoothly. =)
